The company
Scepter Corporation is one of Canadas leading manufacturers of injection and blow-molding products for commercial and military applications. They have a proud history as innovators, having introduced the first plastic Jerry cans to the North American market. They also designed and manufactured the first plastic dairy cases and the first curbside recycling containers.
Scepter markets and sells its products around the world to approximately 200 major clients such as Home Depot (U.S.A.), Honda (Japan), Yamaha (Japan), Canadian Tire, and members of the NATO alliance.
The challenge
Scepter serves a diverse, global market and has many strengths, including the ability to design, engineer, test
and manufacture innovative new products. They needed a way to communicate
these capabilities, and to help clients and prospects around the world
understand how Scepter can serve them.
The communication materials had to effectively inform customers of Scepters wide range of capabilities, be cost effective and made available to multiple markets in a number of languages.
The solution
The first stage in this project was to analyze the needs of product managers within the Scepter organization. To do
this, we met with key individuals at Scepter to determine their needs
and expectations, as well as the needs of their target market.
Once we had this baseline information, we were able to develop a communication strategy that served the diverse needs of
each product manager. We recommended that Scepter not attempt to sell
individual products. Instead, a broad communication strategy should be developed that would clearly define their product diversity, and would provide examples about how this expertise could be used to meet the unique and individualized needs of its customers.
In the execution phase, we developed the actual
communication vehicles that would be used to introduce and promote Scepters capabilities. Two communication tools were chosen: a multilingual CD-ROM, and a dynamic web site to complement the CD-ROM.
The CD-ROM that we developed provides universal
appeal and impacts heavily on the user with the use of clear graphics, sound, animation and video. The web site provides similar product information combined with up-to-date details about the organization, but in a format geared toward the Internet.
The result
The CD-ROM is used as an important marketing tool for Scepter, and it is regularly distributed to interested companies around the globe. For the first time, major clients are finally able to see and understand Scepters capabilities, which is, in turn,
leading to increased opportunities with these customers. Scepters web site is an extension of the CD.
Today, we are in the process of updating the CD-ROM as Scepter continues to design and produce innovative new products.
